Fun fact: around 1951, Dr Alexander did a survey of the granite resources of Pulau Ubin and estimated that there was enough granite on Singapore island and on Pulau Ubin to last five hundred years!

Ubin Quarry when viewed from the peak of Puaka Hill is probably the most impressive of Pulau Ubin's quarries; Pekan Quarry is the easiest to get to right in front of Butterfly Hill; Ketam Quarry towards the west is close to those headed for the Ketam Mountain Bike Park ; Balai Quarry can be seen on the way out from Chek Jawa.
The area around Ubin quarry has some durian trees, durians are pollinated by fruit bats (habitatnews,n.d.) of which, Pulau Ubin houses the nectar bat in mangroves. At the foot of Puaka Hill, the land has a long history of a rubber plantation (refer to Appendix D-2) before it was abandoned and nature took over.

Pekan Quarry was previously known as Ho Man Choo Quarry but was renamed to reflect its proximity to the main village ("pekan" is Malay for "town") of Pulau Ubin. The site had two quarry pits that "merged" into one as the pits filled up with rainwater. The water at Pekan Quarry overflows at a drainage point that leads to the sea.
