I used to use the sunbeam EM480 grinder which I had with my old sunbeam machine. It was a pretty good grinder but I just found it couldn't cope with the accuracy required for the Silvia!

The PL53 is stepless and allows super fine tuning, whereas the Infinity has very coarse threads for the burr carrier to ride in and that doesn't give much range for espresso. It (PL53) probably also has alot less retention, which is one thing I don't like with the Infinity.

Well, folks were saying that you needed some pretty fancy and very expensive grinders. The old whirly gig blade grinder would cut it. Well, I've had the Silvia for a little bit over a month now, and I couldn't be more pleased. I purchased both the Silvia and Rocky doserless grinder at the same time from Cerini Coffee and Gifts in the Bronx (great seller!) and it arrived promptly and excellently packaged with a bonus lb of beans to get started!

Jun 23, 2021· Our only advice is to invest in a good standalone good coffee grinder, as grinding is just about the only thing Miss Silvia can't do. Rancilio Rocky Espresso Grinder is a perfect match for Silvia, you can achieve coffee shop standard espresso quality at home. We don't recommend using pre-ground coffee for such a great coffee machine.
1st point get a good grinder? I use the Rocky grinder and can get down to a very fine grind. 2nd are you using the 1x or 2x basket in the portafiller. The single is tricky to use, the grind must be fine, the amount and tamper needs to be sufficient. I rarely use the single.

I used a modified cheap, under a $100, Capressa Infinity grinder from which I removed the ball bearing, which limits it to 16 presets, making it a grinder with infinite settings.
